London/Online Piano Lessons

I’m an experienced and passionate pianist, composer and teacher based in central London teaching students across the UK. I’ve been teaching pupils of all ages and experience levels since 2013 and I love what I do.

Teaching Philosophy

Since 2013 I have been teaching piano to complete beginner, intermediate and advanced students. My students are a mix of all ages - children as well as adults, many of whom played when they were younger and now are interested in rediscovering their musical abilities. I firmly believe that the mark of a good teacher is the capacity not simply to transfer information and skills, but to develop and instil a love of music and to foster the ability to teach oneself. I know from my own experience that the greatest driver of improvement is not discipline and regimen, though these things are important. The most vital thing is love of music, and to encourage this is the greatest responsibility a teacher has.

Students are often uncertain whether they should be taking exams or not. Each student is different; for some, preparing for an exam can be really motivating and provide a sense of direction, structure and achievement. For others, they can be more hindrance than inspiration and these students prefer to learn without them - I have experience and enjoy teaching with either aim in mind. In any case, together we will be learning how to progress as a musician quickly and efficiently, to play expressively and with confidence and to develop comfortable and fluid technique. Above all, we will be learning to sharpen any musician's most important tool: the ear!

Learn with an experienced performer

I received several years of extensive training at the Eastman School of Music, USA and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, two of the world’s best musical institutions, gaining experience as an international performing musician. Below are live recordings made at some of my previous recitals.

Piano Lessons

The normal length for a lesson is 1 hour and can be held either face-to-face or online.

Weekly lessons

This is the most common way to learn and is what I strongly recommend to all of my students. Weekly piano lessons are the surest way to improve and keep practice and preparation regular and consistent, which is particularly important for those considering applying to study music at a conservatoire or university.

Single lesson

Booking a single one-off lesson is a good option for those who will find it difficult to find time to commit to a weekly lesson. This will generally be more appropriate for advanced students who feel more comfortable practising on their own and who already have several years of experience at the keyboard. One-off lessons are less suitable for beginner and intermediate students, since they need regular input and guidance from their teacher.

Online trial session

I offer a free 30 minute no-strings-attached session to anyone who is considering taking up online piano lessons with me. This will give you the opportunity to see what the online lesson format is like and to give you an idea of what to expect in your piano lessons in general.

Theory, Aural Skills, Accompanying

Music theory tuition

Anyone wishing to take ABRSM exams beyond Grade 5 on their instrument must first pass the Grade 5 theory exam. Theory lessons follow a detailed programme according to the latest syllabus. Most only take the Grade 5 exam, but for those wishing to take the exams preceding Grade 5 or beyond up to Grade 8, please get in touch as well.

Aural skills

Regardless of which instrument you play or whether you sing, the ABRSM exams have a portion devoted to developing aural skills. This portion of the exam is exactly the same for singers and instrumentalists alike and requires the use of a piano. In addition to this, keen aural skills are essential to developing yourself as a musician at every level. This is generally aimed at non-pianists, who will need a pianist to help with this part of the exam.

Accompanying

I have many years of professional accompanying experience with singers and instrumentalists. Please contact me if you want to request an accompanist for a performance, audition or exam.
